Early Life and Faith Formation
The Reverend Abasilum Smith hails from Lionel Town, located in the Parish of Clarendon on the island of Jamaica. His faith was nurtured and matured by the dedicated members of the Watsonton Methodist Church, where he engaged with various ministries both locally and district-wide.
Educational Background and Early Career
Before pursuing ministry, Rev. Smith completed a three-year Diploma in Primary (Elementary) Education at St Joseph Teachers’ College. He taught sixth grade for three years before candidating for full-time ministry in 2007.
Ministerial Training and Early Appointments
Rev. Smith trained at the United Theological College of the West Indies (UTCWI) and the University of the West Indies (UWI), earning a Diploma in Ministerial Studies and a Bachelor of Arts Degree. As a Minister-In-Training, he served circuits in the Jamaica, South Caribbean, and Bahamas/Turks and Caicos Islands Districts of the Methodist Church in the Caribbean and the Americas (MCCA). Upon completing his training, he was stationed in the Jamaica District of the MCCA. His first appointment was as a Probationer Presbyter in the Savanna-la-Mar Circuit. After fulfilling ordination requirements, the Conference voted him into full connexion. The church later appointed him Superintendent of the Savanna-la-Mar Circuit.
Leadership Roles and Further Education
After seven years in Western Jamaica, Rev. Smith and his family were stationed in Eastern Jamaica’s St. Thomas Circuit, where they served for three years. He was later asked by the Jamaica District to oversee Methodist Schools, providing leadership for 73 institutions. In 2022, he moved to the United States for further studies, completing the Master of Theological Studies program at Pittsburgh Theological Seminary in 2023.
Ministry Focus and Contributions
Rev. Smith has emphasized Education, Christian Education, Resources and Development, and Pastoral Care. He has contributed to devotionals, led Bible studies, and created Bible study materials for congregations and summer camps. He has assisted in liturgical preparation for connexional and district-wide use. Additionally, he has founded and expanded mission projects, launching new initiatives like the Sheffield Methodist Education and Resource Center and producing the weekly radio program “All Loves Excelling” with his wife.
Committee Engagement and Personal Interests
Rev. Smith has dedicated time to the Camping Ministry of the Jamaica Methodist District. At the District level, he has served on various committees, including Christian Education, Resources and Development, Mission, Evangelism and Church Growth, General Purposes, and Ministerial Training. He has also been a member and Chairman of several school boards. His personal interests include camping, board games, family time, and sightseeing. He is married to Rev. Natoya Thomas-Smith, and together, they are the parents of Abasilum Gunter.
